In the heart of downtown Los Angeles at the GRAMMY Museum, MusiCares' inaugural Mindful May event, presented by Sweetwater, provided a profound exploration of mental health within the music industry.

The event featured a thought-provoking panel discussion with Dr. Siri, a licensed marriage and family therapist renowned for over 25 years of experience. Dr. Siri has brought his expert advice to the mainstream, notably on Viceland Network's "The Therapist," where he conducted therapy sessions with high-profile artists like Waka Flocka, OT Genasis, and Katy Perry.

Joining him was Olu, known artistically as Johnny Venus, one-half of the GRAMMY-nominated hip-hop duo EARTHGANG. Olu has recently expanded his artistic endeavors into wellness entrepreneurship with his new company, Compxss, inspired by a life-altering retreat in Bali. This session offered attendees an invaluable look into the harmonious intersection of mental wellness and creative expression.

This insightful conversation not only highlighted the panelists' personal methods for maintaining mental health, but also underscored the broader implications for artists and professionals dealing with the pressures of the music industry — fostering a supportive community dialogue around these critical issues.

Below, unpack the major themes and insights from this pivotal discussion at the first-ever Mindful May event.

Finding Harmony Between Mind & Spirit

The panel started by diving deep into the significance of aligning the mind and spirit to foster mental health, emphasizing that true wellness is rooted in internal congruence.

Dr. Siri highlighted the foundational importance of aligning the mind and spirit, stating, "When the mind is in harmony with the spirit, then we are in alignment with protection."

The panelists both underscored the need for a multifaceted approach to mental health. Olu outlined a holistic approach to mental wellness, emphasizing the need for self-awareness through meditation, stress management via breathwork techniques like Pranayama, and the importance of physical activities including his yoga practice to maintain mental balance.

"Being aware of literally how you talk to yourself forms the basis of mindfulness," Olu noted, highlighting the importance of internal dialogue. Reflecting on the effectiveness of these practices, he also shared a personal testament: "My inner peace has skyrocketed. I don't feel like I am constantly bombarded by my bad decisions or someone else's bad decisions on me."

Reconciling Spirituality With Material Success

The panel explored the nuanced relationship between spiritual well-being and material success, challenging the common perception that these aspects must exist in opposition. Olu poignantly expressed, "My income is directly reflected upon my level of peace," underscoring the intrinsic connection between financial health and mental peace.

This sparked a broader conversation about the true meaning of wealth, urging attendees to consider a definition of richness that integrates both spiritual and material elements.

"There is nothing holy about being poor," Dr. Siri noted, emphasizing the importance of viewing financial success as a potential contributor to spiritual growth, rather than a hindrance.

Enhancing Mental Health Through Creative Expression

Olu also discussed how his mental state profoundly influences his artistic output. He articulated that his most authentic and impactful creations stem from a state of mental clarity and peace. He also stressed the importance of creativity in maintaining mental health, not just as an output but as a therapeutic process.

He addressed a question from the audience regarding the integration of spirituality and mindfulness within the Black and BIPOC music communities, stressing the need for artists to recognize the broader value they provide.

"My point of view is... We as artists have to understand the wellspring of energy and value that we bring," Olu explained. He challenged the notion that an artist's worth is solely derived from their output, advocating for a broader understanding of value that encompasses both the creative process and its impact on community and personal wellness.

Leaning Into The Power Of Community

Both panelists emphasized the important role of community in fostering mental health. Olu spoke about the strength he draws from his connections, particularly in the music community, and how these relationships contribute to fostering a stable and supportive environment, essential for sustaining mental health.

The panel resonated deeply with the audience, and the sense of community was palpable during the interactive Q&A session. Attendees expressed feelings of validation and appreciation for the insights shared, particularly regarding the challenges unique to the music industry. The collaborative dialogue between panelists and attendees exemplified the collective effort needed to tackle the complex mental health challenges within creative industries.

Dr. Siri reinforced this sentiment with his concluding advice: "Our minds will work for us so we can bring the people and things into our lives so we can have victory with every challenge that we encounter." His words encapsulated the proactive approach to mental health advocated throughout the panel.

The Mindful May event not only provided crucial tools and knowledge for managing mental health, but also reinforced MusiCares' commitment to supporting the holistic well-being of music professionals. Reflecting on the discussions, it was clear that the journey to mental health is an effort that thrives on both personal commitment and the supportive dynamics of community interaction.
