It's that time of the year again, where our music community comes together for the MusiCares annual Wellness in Music Survey, which launched May 28. Open until June 7, the survey spotlights many critical concerns industry professionals face.
Last year's survey results revealed key insights: 64 percent and 59 percent of respondents reported experiencing moderately high to very high levels of stress and anxiety, respectively. Lack of insurance/affordability and stigma remain the biggest barriers to obtaining mental health care, underlining the urgent need for more accessible mental health resources.
Many also faced challenges related to financial stability and insurance, with over 50 percent of respondents reporting very low to somewhat low confidence in their ability to cover living expenses, thus underscoring the necessity for comprehensive support systems. Additionally, while health insurance coverage among survey respondents was on par with U.S. national averages, many music professionals have inadequate coverage without access to preventive care services. This further highlights the importance of MusiCares' preventive dental, hearing, vision, and vocal clinics.
In recognition of these ongoing challenges, MusiCares introduced new initiatives and support services. First, we expanded our Mental Health and Addiction Recovery portfolio to include more access to virtual/tele-health services for substance use treatment, thereby enabling us to increase access to recovery resources. MusiCares also partnered with Life's Jam to offer customized financial coaching to eligible music professionals, as well as adding childcare costs to the list of expenses supported through our emergency financial assistance program. And as for healthcare? We provided support for preventative care such as mammograms and cervical cancer screenings, helping bridge the gap between needed services and insurance coverage.
