Body Text 1 - MusiCares Feb Programming

February is a busy month for the Health &amp; Human Services Team at MusiCares. In addition to the nine free **[support groups](https://www.musicares.org/get-help/addiction-recovery)** they hold weekly — and four medical clinics running all month long — the team is also hosting a variety of virtual programs on timely topics from renter's rights to tax season.

Every program is free and open to all music community members interested in attending. Take a look at the list below to see what MusiCares has coming up this month.

## **February 2: Renter's Rights – Washington State**

In 2021, MusiCares implemented a "Renter’s Rights" workshop series in response to the end of eviction moratoriums around the country. On Feb. 2, the series continues with a workshop on renter's rights in Washington State.

MusiCares, in partnership with the Tenants Union of Washington State, will present topics including eviction and the court process, document preparation and resources, and general rights for renters.

## February 8: Tax Tips for Musicians and Music Creators

With April 18 fast approaching, tax season has officially arrived. MusiCares knows managing taxes and accounting can be particularly challenging for musicians and music creators, who often file as independent contractors with multiple unique income streams. That's why on Feb. 8, they're partnering with Keila Hill-Trawick, MBA, CPA &amp; founder of Little Fish Accounting, for a "Tax Tips 101" workshop.

During the session, participants will receive practical advice on taxes and create plans to effectively manage their business or freelance finances.

## February 15: Renter's Rights – Austin

On Feb. 15, MusiCares' hosts another "Renter's Rights" workshop — this time with the focus on Austin, Texas. In partnership with BASTA (the Building and Strengthening Tenant Action), MusiCares will provide participants with a better understanding of the eviction process and renter's rights for those in the Austin area. They'll also provide resources for document preparation and legal aid.

## February 16: Talk Saves Lives

On Feb. 16, MusiCares will join the American Federation for Suicide Prevention for a workshop on suicide prevention. Suicide prevention is foundational to the work of the Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Team at MusiCares, who recently partnered with the **[Find Your Anchor Foundation](https://www.musicares.org/news/find-your-anchor-partnership-suicide-prevention)** for a separate suicide awareness campaign.

MusiCares looks forward to furthering the great work of the AFSP and hosting a workshop on a topic so crucial to the MusiCares' mission.

MusiCares Dental Clinic In Philadelphia

On Oct. 24 MusiCares will sponsor a free dental clinic for Philadelphia-area music professionals from 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Services provided will include a dental exam, teeth cleaning and X-rays, and will be provided to pre-screened, pre-registered attendees. The clinic will take place at The Recording Academy Philadelphia Chapter office. For more information and to register, call toll-free at 877.303.6962.

Above & Beyond's Paavo Siljamäki Talks Burnout And Staying "Mentally Fit" At Miami Winter Music Conference

A musician's lifestyle certainly sounds romantic: constantly on the road, meeting new people every night, playing shows to sold-out crowds. But the touring life isn't all glitz and glam. Navigating music industry success can actually result in neglect of one's mental health. This is exactly the topic **[MusiCares](https://musicares.org)** and the Recording Academy explored in a panel called Survive the Madness: Music and Mental Health at Miami Winter Conference in late March of this year.

Featuring Paavo Siljamäki from GRAMMY-nominated British trance group **[Above &amp; Beyond](https://www.grammy.com/artists/above-beyond/19436)**, the panel explored the performer's journey, which he spoke about with MusiCares senior director Jennifer Leff.

"What is mental health to you," she asked?

"I made the wrong choice internalizing my stress," said Siljamäki. "About a year and a half ago, I was ready to leave music. I saw music as the source of all of my pain, so for me the solution was for me, to quit the band."

"Quite quickly I realized that that's not the way I could keep going," he continued. "The way for me to go forward is to look at what led to this point, how can I actually learn from this, how can I go on? And I ended up going to doing this thing called the Hoffman Process in the U.K. They actually helped me in a group therapy setting to find the reasons why I burned out. And I realized that a lot of other people burn out too. I'm not unique in any way... I've been able to really look at what causes me stress and I've refound my love for music."

Body Text 1 - What's Going On At MusiCares September

Each month, MusiCares offers a variety of programs, support groups, and health clinics to music people in need. This September, MusiCares is honoring National Recovery Month and Suicide Prevention Week with a number of resources dedicated to the recovery journeys and suicide awareness.

Programming kicks off on Sept. 8 with "Awareness and Action: Suicide Prevention in Music," a panel conversation with four leading organizations within the music and mental health communities. MusiCares will also be attending several festivals this month, offering hearing clinics to artists and crew.

### September 8: Awareness and Action: Suicide Prevention in Music

National Suicide Prevention Week is September 4-10, and MusiCares is bringing together [BEAM: Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective](https://beam.community/), [Country Music Association](https://www.cmaworld.com/), [SAVE: Suicide Awareness Voices of Education](https://save.org/), and [Silence the Shame](https://silencetheshame.com/) for an important conversation focused on suicide prevention and the unique stressors and mental health challenges of the music industry.

### September 15-16: Americanafest

MusiCares is hosting a hearing clinic during Americanafest in Nashville, Tennessee. Eligible professionals will be fitted for free, custom ear plugs during the hearing clinic.

All services are open to artists and crew only, while supplies last.

### September 22-23: Firefly Festival

MusiCares is hosting a hearing clinic during the Firefly Festival in Dover, Delaware. Eligible professionals will be fitted for free, custom ear plugs during the hearing clinic.

All services are open to artists and crew only, while supplies last.

### September 24-25: Pilgrimage Festival

MusiCares is hosting a hearing clinic during the Pilgrimage Festival in Franklin, Tennessee. Eligible professionals will be fitted for free, custom ear plugs during the hearing clinic.

All services are open to artists and crew only, while supplies last.

### Support Groups

MusiCares offers 10 free weekly online emotional support and addiction recovery support groups including women's music community, Black music community, and LGBTQIA+ music community groups open to anyone interested in participating.

Six of these support groups place a focus on the music community in recovery, from all stages of precontemplation to sobriety. All of our incredible addiction support group leaders span different time zones, offering several time options to music people in need Tuesday through Thursday each week.

Support groups are a safe and secure place to sort through a variety of wellness issues or concerns. Each group is led by a licensed professional and additional assistance is available if needed.

### Health Clinics

MusiCares provides a wide range of health and wellness services, including assistance with medical expenses (such as doctor, dentist and hospital bills) as well as support in obtaining low-cost health insurance and preventative services.
